Edgeworth, Maria (1768–1849), novelist and educationist, was born on 1 January 1768 at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire, the eldest daughter and third child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744–1817), inventor and educationist, and his first wife, Anna Maria Elers (1743–1773).
