Porter, George, Baron Porter of Luddenham (1920–2002), chemist, was born on 6 December 1920 in Silver Street, Stainforth, Yorkshire, the only child of John Smith Porter (1876–1940), a builder and lay Methodist preacher, and his wife, Alice Ann, née Roebuck (1884–1962), who had before her marriage worked as an assistant matron in a poor law institution.
