Rutledge, John (1739–1800), revolutionary politician in America, was born in Charles Town, South Carolina, in September 1739, the oldest of the seven children of the Irish immigrant John Rutledge (d. 1750) and his fifteen-year-old wife, Sarah Hext (1724–1792).
