Cairncross, John (1913–1995), spy, was born on 25 July 1913, at Pine Cottage, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, the youngest of four boys and four girls of Alexander Kirkland Cairncross (1865–1947), ironmonger, and his wife, Elizabeth Andrew Wishart (1875–1958), schoolteacher.
