Wheatcroft, Leonard (1627–1707), craftsman and author, was born on 1 May 1627 at Ashover, Derbyshire, the eldest of nine children of Leonard Wheatcroft (d. 1648), yeoman, and his wife, Anne Harrison (c.1605–1693).
