Gibson [née Smith], Margaret Dunlop (1843–1920), Arabic and Syriac scholar, was born on 16 April 1843 in Irvine, Ayrshire, the younger twin daughter of John Smith (d. 1866), writer to the signet, and his wife, Margaret, née Dunlop (d. 1843, three weeks after the twins' birth), both Scottish Presbyterians.
