Farrar, Sir George Herbert, baronet (1859–1915), mine owner and politician in South Africa, was born at Mill End, Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, on 17 June 1859, the third son of Charles Farrar (1832/3–1896), general medical practitioner, and his wife, Helen, née Howard (1830/31–1921). When he was quite young his father, who did not take his medical practice very seriously, left the family rather dramatically by rowing away down the river towards the fens, where he spent the rest of his life.
