Gurney, Samuel (1816–1882), philanthropist and banker, was born on 3 February 1816, at Upton, Essex, the second of three sons of Samuel Gurney (1786–1856), Quaker philanthropist and discount banker, and his wife, Elizabeth, née Sheppard (d. 1855). He had six sisters.
