Brown, William (1764–1814), naval officer, was born on 8 May 1764 at Leesthorpe Hall, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, the second son of John Suffield Brown, deputy lord lieutenant of the county. He joined the navy aged thirteen as a captain's servant and had been appointed a midshipman by the late 1770s. ...
