Synge, (Edmund) John Millington (1871–1909), playwright, was born on 16 April 1871 at Newtown Little, Rathfarnham, south of Dublin, the youngest child of John Hatch Synge (1823–1872) and Kathleen, née Traill (1838–1908). The pervasive religious gloom of the household was not lessened by the father's falling a victim of smallpox, and his burial on the youngest son's first birthday.
