Adams, Sir Walter (1906–1975), university administrator, was born on 16 December 1906 at Brighton, the son of Walter Adams, a builder's clerk, and his wife, Margaret Evans. He was educated at Brighton, Hove, and Sussex grammar school and at University College, London, where he read history, being awarded the BA degree with first-class honours in 1928, and where he was subsequently appointed to a lectureship in history.
