Barnes, Ernest William (1874–1953), bishop of Birmingham, was born on 1 April 1874 in Altrincham, Cheshire, the eldest of the four sons of John Starkie Barnes (1843–1922) and his wife, Jane Elizabeth Kerry (1850–1938), of Charlbury, Oxfordshire.
