Winsor, Frederick Albert [formerly Friedrich Albrecht Winzer] (1763–1830), gas engineer, was born in Brunswick, Germany, the son of Friedrich Albrecht Winzer. Virtually nothing is known of his early life, save that he was educated in Hamburg and early developed an interest in the economical use of fuel. He had, however, no technical skills and was essentially a persuasive entrepreneur with a great flair for promoting extravagant projects. Although he mastered English he is recorded as having always been conspicuously foreign in speech and manner....
