Sylvester, James Joseph (1814–1897), mathematician, was born on 3 September 1814 in London, the youngest son of five sons and four daughters of Abraham Joseph, merchant. Two of his older brothers emigrated to the United States and adopted the surname Sylvester, a convention which he and at least one other brother followed.
