Stapylton [Stapleton], Sir Robert (1607x9?–1669), translator and playwright, was born in Carlton, near Snaith, Yorkshire, the third son of Richard Stapylton (d. 1636), and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Pierrepont. The family was staunchly Roman Catholic in an area which had only partially accepted the Elizabethan religious settlement. There is no record of either birth date or baptism. About 1621 ...
