Shirley, James (bap. 1596, d. 1666), playwright and poet, was baptized on 7 September 1596 at St Mary Woolchurch, London, the oldest of five children of James Shirley (1569–1617) and his wife, Catherine. His father and grandfather and their children appear in the same parish records, but there remains little verifiable information about the family; it is likely that they had a small shop. ...
