Nuttall, Thomas (1786–1859), botanist, was born on 5 January 1786 at Long Preston, near Settle, Yorkshire, the first of three children of James Nuttall (d. 1798) and his wife, Margaret (1759–1841), daughter of Richard Hardacre and Agnes, née Taylor.
