Smith, Michael Garfield (1921–1993), social anthropologist, was born in Church Street, Kingston, Jamaica, on 18 August 1921, the second son of Charles Garfield Smith (b. 1874), a produce dealer and planter of English extraction, and Lucille Campbell (d. 1921), a nurse of Jamaican Creole background.
