Fry, Sir Edward (1827–1918), judge and zoologist, was born in Union Street, Bristol on 4 November 1827, the second son of Joseph Fry (1795–1879) and Mary Ann, née Swaine. Both his parents were Quakers. His father, a manufacturer of chocolate and cocoa, was a man with strong religious and philanthropic interests.
