Murford, Nicholas (d. 1641), salt maker, whose origins are unknown, is thought to have been a rope maker of Aldeburgh before moving to Great Yarmouth, where in 1626 he petitioned for land to erect a ropery. His first application was turned down but permission was granted in May 1628. He prospered in this trade and in February the following year was admitted a free burgess of the port. A later petition for an eight-year lease, to extend his premises, was rejected although he was allowed to remain on the site....
