Charlton, Lionel (1720?–1788), schoolmaster and topographer, was probably born on 2 December 1720 at Upper Stobbilee in the parish of Bellingham, Northumberland, and baptized on 22 December 1720 at Bellingham, the son of Peter Charlton. His gravestone, however, gives an age at death that suggests that he was born in 1721 or 1722.
