Cotton, Henry (1790–1879), ecclesiastical historian, was born in Buckinghamshire on 31 March 1790, a son of the Revd William Cotton, of Chicheley, Berkshire. In 1802 he went to Westminster School and in 1807 he entered Christ Church, Oxford, where he was awarded a first class in classics in 1810, and became Greek reader.
