Niger, Ralph (b. c. 1140, d. in or before 1199?), theologian and chronicler, is of unknown origins. He became a friend of John of Salisbury, and was educated, like him, in the Parisian schools. Unlike his more distinguished compatriot, however, he did not acquire significant office or benefice, although his writings, still for the most part unpublished, reveal a man of considerable erudition in canon and civil law, biblical exegesis, and history.
