Stephen, James (1758–1832), lawyer and slavery abolitionist, was born on 30 June 1758 at Poole, Dorset, the second of seven children of James Stephen (bap. 1733, d. 1779), dealer and conveyancer, and his wife, Sibella (1738–1775), daughter of William Milner.
