Ellis, John (1789–1862), railway promoter and politician, was born on 3 August 1789 at Sharman's Lodge, near Leicester, the eldest of six children of Joseph Ellis (1755–1810), farmer, and his wife, Rebekah, née Burgess (1760–1826), who was Joseph's second cousin. Both parents were Quakers....
