McDougall, Alexander (1732–1786), army officer and revolutionary politician in America, was born in July or August 1732 in Kildalton, Islay, Scotland, the son of Ronald McDougall, a farmer and dairyman, and his wife, Elizabeth. His Presbyterian parents were part of the highland Scottish and northern Irish migration to the American ‘back country’ of the mid-eighteenth century, prepared to brave a war-ridden frontier rather than continuing to endure conditions in their homeland. ...
