Smith, Samuel (1872–1949), tea dealer, was born on 22 June 1872 at 62 Lady Pitt Lane, Hunslet, Leeds, the son of William Smith, willeyer and fettler, and his wife, Harriet, née Powell. He contributed to the family income from the age of nine by working as a butcher's boy on Friday evenings and Saturdays, and then, at the age of ten, as a half-timer was employed as an errand boy for a local tea merchants.
