Scott, John (1836–1880), botanist and gardener, was born on 5 April 1836 at Denholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland, the son of Robert Scott, a tenant farmer, and his wife, Helen Turnbull. He had one elder sister. At the age of four Scott became an orphan and was brought up by an aunt and educated at the parish school.
