Platt, Joseph (c. 1862–1930), businessman and rugby administrator, was a farmer's son born in Royton, near Oldham, Lancashire. He trained as a land surveyor and built up his own substantial business in Oldham. He was a modest, unassuming, even self-deprecating man, but forthright, determined, and energetic.
