Benson [married name McDowall], Ada (1840–1882), headmistress and educationist, was born on 27 November 1840 at Winson Green, Birmingham, sixth of the eight children of Edward White Benson (1800–1843), chemical manufacturer, and his wife, Harriet (née Baker).
