Salomon, Sir Walter Hans (1906–1987), banker, was born in Hamburg on 16 April 1906, the elder son and second of three children of Henry Salomon, personal banker, and his wife, Rena Oppenheimer, from Vancouver. He was educated at the Oberrealschule, Eppendorf, Hamburg. He left at sixteen, partly because he upset its authorities by campaigning against a master active in extreme right-wing politics and partly to be independent of his father, who wanted him to sacrifice football to music....
