Budd, William (1811–1880), physician and epidemiologist, was born on 14 September 1811 at Melhuishes in the village of North Tawton, Devon, where his father, Samuel (1772–1841), practised as a surgeon until his death. Previous generations had been educated at Oxford, but Samuel appears to have studied medicine via apprenticeship and service in the navy. ...
