Hindley, Sir Clement Daniel Maggs (1874–1944), railway engineer, was born in Dulwich, London, on 19 December 1874, the son of Charles Hugh Hindley, carpet warehouseman, and his wife, Mary Ann Miller. He was educated at Dulwich College and entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1893, where he graduated BA in mechanical sciences in 1896.
