Brandreth, Thomas Shaw (1788–1873), inventor and classical scholar, was born on 24 July 1788 in Cheshire, the son of the physician Joseph Brandreth (1746–1815). He attended Eton College and later entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his BA degree in 1810, with the distinctions of second wrangler, second Smith's prizeman, and chancellor's medallist, and his degree of MA in 1813.
