Macdonald, Sir John Alexander (1815–1891), prime minister of Canada, was born in Glasgow on 11 January 1815, one of the five children (and the only male to reach adulthood) of Hugh Macdonald (d. 1841), a merchant, and his wife, Helen Shaw.
