Imlay, Gilbert (1754–1828), land speculator and author, was born on 9 February 1754 in Monmouth county, New Jersey, the son of Peter Imlay, landowner. His upbringing remains obscure but it is known that he served as a paymaster and lieutenant in the American revolutionary army in the American War of Independence between 1777 and 1778 before being wounded in action.
