What’s New: July 2024

This month’s update adds nine lives, with a special focus on women and needlework, introduced by Lynn Hulse, as well as three lives of women in finance: Frances Lambert, Agnes Blencowe, Anastasia Dolby, Elizabeth Glaister, Louisa Wade, Mary Whichelo, Amy Bell, Beatrice Gordon Holmes, and Gladys Brooker.

Carr [née Strettell], Alice Laura Vansittart Comyns (1850–1927), costume designer and writer

From childhood, Alice Comyns Carr had an aptitude for dressmaking. She began designing costumes for the theatre, and for fifteen years had primary responsibility for Ellen Terry’s costumes – notably the blue-green gown that Terry wore as Lady Macbeth in 1888.
