Noakes, George (1924–2008), bishop of St David's and archbishop of Wales, was born on 13 September 1924 at Pen-y-gaer, Nancwnlle, Cardiganshire, the eldest of three sons of David John Noakes, colliery labourer and later farmer, and his wife, Elizabeth Mary, née Lewis.
