Schwarzkopf, Dame (Olga Maria) Elisabeth Friederike (1915–2006), singer, was born on 9 December 1915 in Jarotschin, near Posen, German Silesia, the daughter of Friedrich Schwarzkopf, classical scholar and teacher, and his wife, Elisabeth, née Fröhlich. Like others from similar backgrounds she enjoyed a cultured, middle-class upbringing and was introduced early to music with piano lessons. Having started to study that instrument from the age of seven, she then began to take lessons on the viola, and the organ from the age of ten.
