Rees, Merlyn Merlyn-, Baron Merlyn-Rees (1920–2006), politician, was born Merlyn Rees on 18 December 1920 at 30 Howell Street, Cilfynydd, near Pontypridd, Glamorgan, the son of Levi Rees, miner, and his wife, Edith Mary, née Williams. He was the son and grandson of miners and at his birth had little to look forward to other than more of the same. On his birth certificate his father was described as a coalminer-hewer, that is, one who worked underground actually cutting the coal, the hardest and dirtiest job in the pit. ...
