Williams, Sir Alwyn (1921–2004), geologist and university principal, was born on 8 June 1921 at 4 Grove Terrace, Abercwmboi, Aberdâr, Glamorgan, the eldest of three children of David Daniel (Danny) Williams, tramway inspector, and his wife, (Emily) May, née Rogers.
