Causley, Charles Stanley (1917–2003), poet, was born on 24 August 1917 at Riverside in the parish of St Thomas, Launceston, Cornwall, the only child of Charles Samuel Causley (1885–1924), groom and gardener, and his wife, Laura Jane, née Bartlett (1888–1971), domestic servant.
