Ehret, George Dionysius (1708–1770), botanical artist, was born Georg Dionysius Ehret on 30 January 1708 at Heidelberg, Germany, the elder son of Ferdinand Christoph Ehret, gardener, and Anna Maria, both of Heidelberg. Ehret trained as a gardener, initially working on estates of German nobility, and painted flowers as a hobby, taught by his father, a good draughtsman.
