Duns Scotus, John (c. 1265–1308), Franciscan friar and theologian, was born at Duns, in the Scottish borders, some 15 miles west of Berwick.

Earlier long-held claims for 1274 as the date of his birth and Ireland as his country of origin cannot be sustained, and are no longer accepted. The exact date of his birth, however, remains unknown. The most likely estimate is 1265 or 1266, based upon the earliest reliable dates concerning ...
