Doyle, John [pseud. H. B.] (1797–1868), cartoonist and painter, was born in Dublin. 'His father … belonged to a family which had come from the King's or Queen's county' (Strickland, 1.297). Engen noted that Doyle's 'ancestors traced back to the fourteenth century, and in the seventeenth century were granted large estates and their own coat of arms emblazoned with “Fortitudine Vincit” under a crown and stag' (...
