James, Angharad (1677–1749), Welsh-language poet, was born on 16 July 1677 at Gelli Ffrydiau in the parish of Llandwrog, Caernarvonshire, one of six children of James David (d. 1712) of Gelli Ffrydiau and his wife, Angharad Humphrey (d. 1727). Her education is undocumented but was unusual for a Welshwoman of her time, for as well as learning to read and write she mastered Latin and owned books in that language which later belonged to her descendants.
