Marprelate, Martin (fl. 1588–1589), pamphleteer, was the pseudonymous author of satirical treatises that attacked the Elizabethan church, particularly church government by bishops, and advocated an alternative, presbyterian polity. Witty, irreverent, and swashbucklingly self-confident, the Marprelate tracts scandalized contemporaries and sparked a pamphlet war that provided an important point of reference in contemporary debates about church reform, polemical decorum, and the use of print to appeal to a popular audience....
