Gwalther, Rudolf (1519–1586), theologian, was born on 2 October 1519 in Zürich, Switzerland, the son of Andreas Gwalther (d. 1519), master builder in that city, and Adelheid Hartfelder. His father was killed by a falling beam, causing his mother to give birth in the seventh month of her pregnancy.
