Tutuola, Amos (1920–1997), writer, was born at Ipose-Ake, Abeokuta, a large Yoruba-speaking town in Ogun state in south-western Nigeria, in June 1920 (he was unsure himself of the exact date of his birth). He was the son of Christian parents: his father was a cocoa farmer, and his mother and aunt told him all the folk-tales they had heard from his grandmother: the great majority of these narratives were supernatural in form and didactic in substance.
