Crofton, Sir Walter Frederick (1815–1897), prison administrator and penal reformer, was born at Courtrai, Flanders, on 27 February 1815. His father, Walter Crofton, a captain in the 54th foot regiment, was killed shortly afterwards at the battle of Waterloo. No details of his mother have been discovered.
